Our front page story is not savoury but it is a reality which we must redress.
So much of the taxpayer's money and individual family resources go into the education of our children. It is therefore painful to read that some female candidates have been put in the family way by unscrupulous persons in the community
Although in some cases these are victims of their classmates, there are others who were impregnated by irresponsible adults, some with wives and children.
A hard look needs to be taken at this subject in the context of our cultural setting. In many families elders will plead for "understanding" as a way of containing negative occurrences such as the impregnation of teenage school girls.
Our parents especially the unlettered must be educated to guard against such interventions since they have had negative repercussions on society.
It is such persons who cause crimes in communities to remain concealed from law enforcement agents.
By this editorial we call on members of society to take a critical look at the incidence of JSS pregnancies with a view to stemming it, especially since a new education reform programme is in place in the country.
The efforts being put in especially girl-child education would come to naught if the pupils end up getting impregnated by some irresponsible adults.
The punitive sentence for rape should be reviewed so that it is more deterrent. Sex education must be given priority attention and should involve parents as well as the media.
Some programmes especially on TV are not favourable to children but shown at times that children are wide awake. This does not show any seriousness at bringing up disciplined children.
There is the need to take another look at the rising incidence of JSS pregnancies. Not doing so would suggest that we do not think that there is something wrong.
